S-61 Inaugural Ceremony LAX Gate 77
Comments:
Mike Minear: A great day of achievment for L.A. Airways! What a jump in techonology as we entered the jet age with twin-turbine equipment at a time when the majors, were just beginning to get jets and still operated DC-6's 7s, and Constelations. Note how happy everyone is! We were way ahead of our time. Please help me identify all those present, Clarence Belinn, Malvina Belinn, Fred Milam, John Kane, Robert Kirschten? (chasing his daughter) The mayor of Anaheim. Does anyone know the date? Where was I, in San Bernardino ? Does anyone know who was flying the S-55 in the "City at Night" segment by Ken Crane?
Mark Strussenberg: Mike, that was great! state of the art then, antique now, kinda like us...

LAX #1 Opportunity Market
This is a video & written presentation of an opportunity for Northwest Airlines to feed traffic to LAX via Sikorsky S-61 helicopters. It was handed personally to Mr. Al Checci when he made a station visit to Los Angeles. He never responded, or returned any of my phone calls to his office. Click on video below, written presentation below the video.
At the point in time this offer was made to Northwest, Fred Milam was in good health and was more than willing to go and talk to Mr. Checci about Helicopter operations at LAX. One of the things we discussed was the alliance Northwest was developing with KLM. KLM and operator of S-61 could have shared parts inventory with Northwest in LAX. If Northwest needed a gear box, one could be loaded on one of NW's scheduled 747 trips and sent comat to LAX, probably quicker than getting it from the factory in Conneciticut.

S-51 Instrument Flying - The long effort to obtain FAA certification for Rotary Wing IFR operations.
Finally our S-61's could fly IFR. Even then we tried for years to get our Newport Beach Heliport certified. Mr. Nixon bought San Clemente estate and they wanted to use LAAirways Newport Beach heliport to land Marine One . One week later IFR to JNP was approved! Click on document below...

DVD 1104 LAX #1 Opportunity Market
This is a DVD, hastily put together (one week) to present to Mr. Checci when he and his partner Gary Wilson bought Northwest Airlines. Fred Milam told me that Carson was putting 3 of our aircraft up for sale and since the Anaheim Heliport was still intact I got the inspiration that re-instating helicopter operations along the lines of an "Airlink" operation would be good for Northwest Airlines.

DVD 1105 Afternoon with Bob Hubley, V.P. Sales
While working for Northwest Airlines I was able to transfer to Los Angeles from Detroit which brought me a lot closer to my family living in Las Vegas. Bob Hubley was my boss from my very first day I started working for L.A. Airways until we closed the doors. Later when I became District Manager of Anehim I had responsibilities to Fred Milam, V.P. Operations and John Kane. V.P. Treasurer who of course the accounting department reported to.
On one of my days off I drove to Yaciapa and I took videos of Bob's photo alubm and he shwed me his Iris flowers.
